Types of Rodents and the Dangers they Bring
Rodents have been the bane of humans for thousands of years. There are many types of rodents: mice, rats, squirrels, chipmunks, voles, and gophers are all rodents. When they enter your living space, however, are you familiar with the various dangers that come with them?
Their waste can carry harmful bacteria and viruses, they can be carriers of disease, or they can transport other pests such as fleas, mites, and ticks into your home. These parasites can carry their own diseases.
Bacteria and Viruses
According to the CDC, rodents alone are responsible for 11 deadly diseases. Simply breathing in dust contaminated with rodent urine or feces is enough to contract some of the diseases.
Rodent droppings can carry viruses that cause Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, Hemorrhagic Fever, Lassa Fever, Lymphocytic Chorio-meningitis, and Omsk Hemorrhagic Fever. They can also carry bacteria which can result in Leptospirosis, the Plague, Rat-Bite Fever, Salmonellosis, and Tularemia.
Rodents commonly carry other pests along with them, including fleas, ticks, lice, and mites. While rodents might enter your house, and stay in certain areas, the pests they bring with them will infiltrate your entire house.
Fleas, ticks, lice, and mites are not just annoying. They, too, can be harbingers of disease. In addition to the diseases listed above, these hitchhikers can bring a whole new set of diseases.
Lice can transmit bacteria that cause Bartonellosis (Trench fever), Borreliosis (relapsing fever), and certain types of Rickettsiosis (typhus). Ticks are the source of several deadly or debilitating diseases such as meningoencephalitis, Lyme Disease, Q fever, tick-borne Spotted Fevers, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Tularemia.
All types of rodents must chew constantly to keep their teeth from growing too long. This is bad news when they enter your house because they will chew anything and everything. This creates expensive damage.
Rodents can chew through your wiring, insulation, and wood. The holes they leave can create new entryways allowing even more rodents can enter your house. It can be quite expensive to repair or replace the damaged infrastructure, especially if it’s inside a ceiling or a wall.
Rodents multiply at alarming rates, so it’s imperative to take action as soon as you see the first sign of an intruder. Anytime you notice droppings, spot a critter running around, or find a pile of nesting material somewhere, it’s time to act.
