Pest Control Questions and Answers from Capitol Pest
How long has Capitol Pest been in business?
Founded in 1936, Capitol Pest has been providing customer-recommended pest control services to the Washington DC area for more than 75 years.
My neighbor recommended that I call Capitol Termite & Pest Control. Are you the same company?
Yes. We were founded as Capitol Chemical Company and later changed our name to Capitol Termite & Pest Control, and then to Capitol Beltway Termite and Pest Control, before simplifying our name to just Capitol Pest in 2012 in order to better depict our general pest services focused on both prevention and elimination.
What pests do you control?
We can rid your property of pests that are commonly found in Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia homes and businesses, including ants, bed bugs, bees & wasps, beetles, centipedes, cockroaches, crickets, flies, mice & rats, millipedes, mosquitoes, moths, pantry pests, silverfish spiders, stink bugs, ticks, wildlife, termites, …and many more.

Are the products you use safe for my family and pets?
Yes! Capitol Pest uses only EPA-registered products, all of which have specifically worded labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). To enable you to have complete information on any products that are or may be used by your Capitol Pest Service Professional, you can access any product label or MSDS on our MSDS & Labels page. In fact, most products we use are less toxic, if consumed, than caffeine! But, of course, the only ones “consuming” them will be the insects, rodents, and other pests we’re there to eliminate.
What methods do you use to ensure that treatment is effective and safe?
Our professional, certified technicians are trained to reduce or eliminate pesticide use whenever and wherever possible by using the latest technologies and techniques. We work on the outside of your home whenever possible to prevent pests from coming in, and we never apply pesticides without solving the root cause of the problem. By implementing these practices, Capitol Pest provides you with prompt, efficient, courteous, safe service, and effective solutions for all your pest problems.
What can I and my family do to prevent pests?
Pest prevention is primarily a matter of sanitation and exclusion. That is: eliminating food, water, and harborage areas both indoors and outside to reduce the attraction to your home and property, then closing up all gaps, cracks, and holes in the home’s structure to exclude pests—keeping them from getting in. I keep getting ants in my house. I’ve tried spraying but they always come back! What should I do?
Spraying ants will only kill the worker ants that are gathering food for the colony, and if those foragers don’t come back, the colony will simply send out more worker ants. To eliminate ants, you need to eliminate the queen who stays in the nest to breed. Capitol Pest has the knowledge to not only select and apply the right bait for any ant species, so those foraging ants take poisoned bait back to their queen and colony instead, but we also have the experience to locate the colony, or colonies, in order to surgically remove the threat with minimal pesticide use.

I saw a mouse in my house, what should I do?
Unfortunately if you see one mouse in your house, particularly during the day, it is likely that there is a family of mice in or around your home. So if you see any rodent in your home, call us immediately. We will inspect your home to identify nesting areas and feeding grounds, then customize a program for elimination that includes sealing of rodent entry points.
How do I know if I have termites … and what should I do if I do?
If termites are chomping away at your home, the first signs are likely to be a film of gritty dust on wood surfaces, mud tubes, or winged termites. To determine the solidness of a suspected area, tap the wood or poke into the boards to check for hollowness. If you are seeing the insects, capture a few in a covered jar – then give Capitol Pest a call! One of our experienced termite inspectors will provide positive identification of the termite, conduct a thorough inspection of your home, then recommend a customized treatment and provide an estimate.
Do you service for mosquitoes?
Yes! Our Backyard Biting Prevention Treatment programs will provide a barrier against mosquitoes, ticks and fleas for a single event or for the entire summer. We can provide a one-time treatment 2 to 3 days before your outdoor event to keep the bugs at bay, or provide seasonal treatments once every every month between April and October to protect your family and events the whole summer. I think I might have bed bugs in my home. What should I do?
Bed bugs can spread very quickly — A single female can produce up to 500 offspring in a year! – so if you even think you may have bedbugs, it is important to take immediate steps to get rid of them and keep them from spreading.
- First – do not switch beds; the bedbugs are likely to hitch a ride with you to the new location.
- Second – retrieve a sample of the bugs you are seeing. This enables us to positively identify the bedbug and stage of growth.
- Third – Call Capital Pest! Because bedbugs are so complex, trying home remedies to get rid of them is more likely to cause them to spread further. We will treat your home using the most current and effective technologies, and give you a full ONE YEAR Treatment Warranty.
